Régen nem látott zuhanás következett be idén az egyetemi továbbtanulók számában: a tavalyi évhez képest egyhatodával kevesebben jelentkeztek alap- illetve osztatlan képzésekre. Sem a demográfiai folyamatok, sem a középiskolai adatok nem indokoltak ilyen mértékű negatív változást: a 18-20 évesek száma nem csökkent érdemben idén, az érettségizőké is csak elenyésző mértékben tavalyhoz képest. Mivel tehát nem arányos a csökkenés, azt vártuk, hogy jelentős mértékben átalakulnak a továbbtanulási preferenciák a szakterületi és intézményi választásokban, ami jelentősen módosítja a rangsor-helyezéseket is.
Ehhez képest továbbra is fennmaradt az a közel egy évtizedes helyzet, hogy a ranglistán elől levő karok köre lényegében nem változik. A négy, magas presztízsű budapesti egyetem ranking-pozíciója nem csupán tartósságában, hanem a vonzerő és kiválóság koncentrációjában is kiemelkedő. Miközben együttesen is csak az összes rangsorolt kar mintegy 6%-át teszik ki, a korábbi években az első helyes jelentkezések cca 18%-a irányult hozzájuk. Idén ez jelentősen megnőtt, hiszen több, mint 22%-a jelentkezőknek ezek valamelyikét jelölte meg első helyen. A középiskolai versenyen pontszám-többletet elérő kevesek (korábban évente 700-1000 ilyen hallgató volt) általában bő egyharmada jutott be hozzájuk, idén 45%-uk. A kiválóságot mérő másik két indikátor esetében is jelentős a különbség, de ott szűkül az olló: a nyelvvizsgával felvettek aránya idén 20%-kal volt magasabb, mint a többi kar átlaga, azonban ez az eltérés 2014-ben még 29% volt.
A karok oktatói kiválósági rangsorában a nagy hagyományú tudományegyetemek dominanciája is változatlan. A természettudományos, bölcsész és orvosi képzés a tudományos fokozattal és akadémiai doktori címmel bíró oktatók nagy részét felöleli, így az ELTE, SZTE, DE, PTE ezen karai rendre elöl szerepelnek. A rangsor-készítésünk indikátorszámításának sajátosságai révén ugyanakkor néhány kisebb intézmény jóval kevesebb ilyen oktatóval rendelkező kara is elől található, hiszen itt az arányuk igen magas. Ez azonban csak részben torzítás: hiszen mindez azt is kifejezi, hogy az adott karokon (a Műegyetem természettudományi, a Miskolci Egyetem anyagtudományi, a Pannon Egyetem mérnöki vagy a Kaposvári Egyetem agrár-kara) nagyobb eséllyel találkozik a csekélyebb számú hallgató minősített oktatóval.
Az összetett rangsorok pedig kiegyenlítik a hallgatói és oktatói szempontok sokféleségét. Nem véletlen, hogy ezekben meglehetősen stabil a karok helyezése és a tudományegyetemi karok vezető pozíciója a jellemző. Változatlanul az ELTE BTK és TTK, a Semmelweis ÁOK, a SZTE és PTE BTK, a BME GPK és VBK található az első tizedében (1-15 hely) a karoknak, miközben a Pécsi Tudományegyetem orvoskara jelentős előrelépéssel jutott ebbe a körbe, ahogyan a BME Gépészkara is négy helyezést lépett előre. Megemlítendő, hogy a két egyházi egyetemi Bölcsészkar is bekerült az első tízbe, a PPKE 5, a Károli 9 helyezést javítva.

Dr. habil György Fábri (1964) is an habilitated associate professor (Institute of research on Adult Education and Knowledge Management, Faculty of Education and Psychology of Eötvös Loránd University), head of the Social Communication Research Group. Areas of research: university philosophy, sociology of higher education and science, science communication, social communication, church sociology. His monograph was published on the transformation of Hungarian higher education during the change of regime (1992 Wien) and on university rankings (2017 Budapest). He has edited several scientific journals, and his university courses and publications cover communication theory, university philosophy, science communication, social representation, media and social philosophy, ethics, and church sociology.
Mr. Degli Esposti is Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Deputy Rector Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna, Dean of Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna, Head of Service for the health and safety of people in the workplace, President of the Alma Mater Foundation and Delegate for Rankings.

Anna Urbanovics is a PhD student at Doctoral School of Public Administration Sciences of the University of Public Service, and studies Sociology Master of Arts at the Corvinus University of Budapest. She is graduated in International Security Studies Master of Arts at the University of Public Service. She does research in Scientometrics and International Relations.
Dr. Mircea Dumitru is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bucharest (since 2004). Rector of the University of Bucharest (since 2011). Since 1 February 2019 Minister Palkovics as Government Commissioner has been responsible for the coordination of the tasks prescribed in Act XXIV of 2016 on the promulgation of the Agreement between the Government of Hungary and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on the development, implementation and financing of the Hungarian section of the Budapest-Belgrade Railway Reconstruction Project.
He is the past President of the Health and Health Care Economics Section of the Hungarian Economics Association.
Based in Berlin, Zuzanna Gorenstein is Head of Project of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) service project “International University Rankings” since 2019. Her work at HRK encompasses the conceptual development and implementation of targeted advisory, networking, and communication measures for German universities’ ranking officers. Before joining the HRK, Zuzanna Gorenstein herself served as ranking officer of Freie Universität Berlin.
His books on mathematical modeling of chemical, biological, and other complex systems have been published by Princeton University Press, MIT Press, Springer Publishing house. His new book RANKING: The Unwritten Rules of the Social Game We All Play was published recently by the Oxford University Press, and is already under translation for several languages.
